Play ideas for little ones

Weighted Sensory Toy

Yesterday my son asked if he could take his cat Wed to school.  (Wed is essentially an opaque stocking filled with rice with personality.)  You see I’d be happy to send Wed to school except that, well, Wed is cat with a flatulence problem!  He also occasionally poops and pees on those who hold him…  All imaginary of course, and we don’t mind, because he is a source of great laughter…

Anyway, since my son asked to have Wed at school, and since he is a weighted sensory toy, and since my son never asks to take any particular sensory toy to school, I thought I’d make Wed a twin.  A twin with a more proper and polite personality, so that the class would be spared of hearing any rude sounds.

So, I thought you might like to know how to make one for yourself.

What you need:

  • 1 Pair of Opaque stockings in the thickest denier you can find, in the colour you want  (I used a denier of 80)
  • Scissors
  • 2 kg Uncooked Rice
  • Permanent Marker Pen to draw a face

1.  Cut off one leg from the crotch of the stocking

2.  Fill your stocking with rice

3.  Pull the stocking up, and tie a knot at the end

4.  Pull the remaining stocking inside out, over the stocking section with rice, then tie another knot

5.  Draw a face for your pet and enjoy

Enjoy your new weighted sensory pet, it is nice to have it sitting on your lap while doing school work, or just having a toy to cuddle, squish or stroke like a real pet.

Bilibo Games

For the boy’s birthdays just passed, we received 2 Bilibos and a Bilibo Games Box containing 6 mini Bilibos, a bag of Pixels (button like discs) and a rubber dice.

We LOVE it!  It is an open ended toy that can be used in as many ways as you can think of.  Take a look at the link on YouTube

Here are a few game ideas that we came up with today…

Bilibo Marble Pick Up Game

  1. Fill your large Bilibo or large bowl with some marbles
  2. Give each person playing the game a “Grabber” (you can get these from Big W for $1) and a Mini Bilibo or small container
  3. Then have a competition to see who can pick up the most marbles until they are all gone.
  4. Count out the marbles for each person to find the winner.

  3. The person who gets the most “Blob Fish” into the large Bilibo wins.

100 Activity Cards

After making some activity cards for my kid’s pass the parcel game (each layer of wrapping had an activity rather than toy or sweet) I thought they would be useful to have as activities during my normal week.

You’ll need some things around the house/garden to do some of the activities, but you can pick and choose.

So, I’ve made 100 of my card ideas available here: Activity Cards

I would print them out, cut them out and laminate them for longevity.  You could even punch a hole in the corner and tie some string through it to keep them on hand.

Enjoy!

Tyre Inner Tube Swing

My kids absolutely love their tyre swing – and it was so easy and inexpensive to make.

Things you’ll need

  • One 4 wheel drive sized inner tube
  • Rope about 4 meters
  • Carabiner Hook
Instructions
  1. Visit your local tyre shop or mechanic to purchase a new 4 wheel drive inner tube, you can go for larger tyre swings if you like, but I found that the 4 wheel drive tube was a great size for my swing set.  Mine cost $35 new.
  2. Inflate your tyre at the petrol station air pump
  3. Cut the legs off an old pair of jeans or other thick pants so that they can be used to cover the inner tube’s air vent as well as provide some protection for the inner tube from rope burn.
  4. Insert one of the jean legs into the other to double up the fabric
  5. Tie the rope ends together so that the rope forms a loop
  6. Thread the rope through the jean legs and place the jean legs and rope over the inner tube air vent, to wrap around the inner tube
  7. Thread one end of the looped rope through the other and pull to loop around the inner tube.
  8. Tie the rope around the inner tube a few times and attach the carabiner hook.
  9. That’s it.  You’re now ready to give it a go on your swing set.  You can hook it up to the swing set directly or onto a chain for height adjustment.
